IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Roberta Ann
Markure
May 24, 1950 – December 5, 2025
WATERBURY – It is with deep sadness and extraordinarily broken hearts that the family of Roberta “Berta” Ennis Markure shares the news of her peaceful passing on Friday, December 5, 2025, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury after a brief illness. Her sister, beloved family, and friends were by her side when she passed.
Berta was born in Barre, VT, on May 24, 1950, the daughter of the late Robert and Angeline (Corey) Ennis. She was educated in local schools, attending St. Monica’s Elementary School and Marian High School in Barre. In 1989, Berta married Lee Markure Jr. and moved to Waterbury, CT, where they made their home together until his passing in 1997. She worked for the GIL Foundation in her early years. For the past 17 years, she found true joy and purpose as a dog day care attendant at the Haute Dog Hotel in Woodbury, CT, and later at their new location in Southbury. Her role as a “Barktender” suited her perfectly—she adored the dogs in her care and delighted in their antics. Berta had a unique gift for arranging groups of dogs and getting them to sit and pose for photos, which she happily shared with their families. Her dedication, warmth, and gentle presence made her beloved by both pets and people alike. Her love of dogs was one of the guiding lights of her life. Two quotes that reflect her spirit are: “Dogs Are Not Our Whole Lives But They Make Our Lives Whole” and “dogs have a way of finding the people who need them and filling an emptiness we didn’t know we had.”
Berta will forever be remembered for her joyfulness, unwavering love for her family, generosity, and willingness to lend a hand whenever it was needed. She never arrived empty-handed, always bringing a little something that conveyed her thoughtfulness and love. R.I.P. Berta – Please know you are loved.
Left to honor her legacy and cherish her memory, Berta leaves behind her sister, Rebecca Ennis, and her twin brother, Robert Ennis and his wife, Deborah. Beloved cousins also survive her; Linda Washington and her husband Gary, Laura Ryan Lillibridge and her spouse Terri Lillibridge, Steven Behuniak and his spouse Barbara, and Deborah Haydock and her husband Tom and their son Chris. Berta also leaves behind three cherished felines, whose love and cuddles meant so much to her. In addition to her beloved husband, Lee, Berta was predeceased by her mother Angeline Ennis, and her father Robert Ennis.
A Celebration of Life for Berta will be held at a later date alongside her burial in Hope Cemetery, Barre, VT. To honor Berta’s memory and in lieu of flowers, donations to a humane society or pet charity of your choice would be deeply appreciated by her family. Casey’s Eastside Memorial and Cremation Care 1987 East Main St Waterbury CT 06705 has been honored to care for Berta and her family during this difficult time. Loving kindness is always welcome, and it only takes a moment to offer a message of condolence or words of comfort or share a memory of someone important to you. Please visit the funeral home’s tribute page at www.caseyfunerals.com to do so.
