Devoted to his family

WATERBURY – Richard P. Barry, age 80, of Waterbury, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, January 18, 2023. He was the loving husband of Sandra (Matusiewicz) Barry.

Richard was born on July 30, 1942, in Waterbury, CT, the son of the late John F. and Marjorie (Powers) Barry. He was a graduate of Crosby High School and then went on to study at a computer college in Boston, MA for two years. Following college, Richard worked for his father’s company, Quality Liquors, until it closed. He then went on to work for Waterbury Century Brass for 12 years. Following his tenure at Century, Richard was a Direct Support staff member at Southbury Training School where he retired after over 20 years of dedicated service. Richard was an avid Red Sox fan, enjoyed going out to eat, an of occasional trip to the casino, and loved to socialize with people. He loved to spend time with his family and was like a grandpa to everyone he knew and met. Richard never missed a birthday party, especially if there was cake. He had a witty sense of humor and thought he was hilarious. He will be truly missed by all those who were blessed to know and love him.

Left to cherish his memory and honor his legacy besides his wife of 13 years, Sandra, are his daughters; Stacey LaBounty, Megan Barry, and Susan (Barry) Bartley and her husband Joseph, his 13 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren, his siblings, Robert Barry, Anthony Barry, Jeanne Barry, and Carol Barry Powell, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members. Richard was predeceased by his first wife, Susan (Geghan) Barry, his siblings, John, Ruth, Dorothy, Eleanor, Peggy, Paul, and Tommy.

Richard’s family would like to acknowledge and offer their heartfelt thanks to Ashley and Stephanie from Vitas Home Hospice for all love and care they shared with Richard and his family during his illness. They would also like to give special thanks to the staff at Saint Mary’s Hospital and the Oncology nurses at the Leever Cancer Center for going above and beyond to provide Richard with the best care possible.

Funeral services for Mr. Barry will be held on Monday, January 23, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. when a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Mary, Mother of the Church Parish, Saints Peter and Paul Church, 67 Southmayd Road, Waterbury. Those planning to attend are asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Relatives and friends may visit with Richard's family on Sunday January 22, 2023, from 4:00 until 7:00 pm at Casey’s Eastside Memorial Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 1987 East Main St @ Southmayd Rd Waterbury.
