Avid local bowler and fisherman
WATERBURY – Mr. Nathaniel “Sonny” Ecklin Jr, age 83, of Waterbury, CT, passed away in the comfort of his home on Monday, January 16, 2023 surrounded by the love and comfort of his family after a brief illness.
Sonny was born July 15th 1939 in Norfolk, VA, the son of the late Nathaniel and Virginia (Fountain) Ecklin. He was raised in New York and Connecticut where he attended local schools prior to joining the US Army where he proudly served his country during the Cuban Missile Crisis. After being honorably discharged, Sonny return to the CT area where he raised his family in Waterbury and Wolcott. Sonny spent over 20 years working for the former Scovill - Century Brass until their closing and then held various jobs throughout the area. He enjoyed playing cards, listening to the blues, traveling, smoking fine cigars and he was avid fisherman. Sonny also enjoyed bowling and was on several leagues at Lakewood Lanes and was also a champion swimmer.
Left to cherish his memory and honor his legacy are his children; Dianethia Shannon and her husband, Clifton of Naugatuck, and Jana Street and her husband, John of Middletown. He also leaves his 2 grandchildren; Joshua and Jessica Street as well as several nieces, nephews, and great nieces, and nephews and other extend family members and friends, including his longtime friend, Lucy Blizzard, his sister, Tanya Gibson of VA and his former wife Virginia Foster. Sonny was predeceased by his sisters; Jacqueline Young and Eleanor Walton.
Services for Mr. Ecklin will be held on Tuesday, January 24th 2023, at 11:00am at Casey’s Eastside Memorial Funeral Home and Cremation Care at 1987 East Main St Waterbury. Relatives and friends may visit on Tuesday morning from 10:00 am until the time of the service at 11:00 Burial with full military honors will follow at 1:00 pm in the State Veteran Cemetery, 317 Bow lane Middletown CT.
