WATERBURY – With profound sadness and heavy hearts, the family of Ms. Carol A. Johnston, age 77, of Wolcott, announces her peaceful passing on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at the VITAS Inpatient Unit of Saint Mary’s Hospital, surrounded by the love of her family and friends.
Carol was born on December 23, 1948, in Waterbury, the daughter of the late James and Kathleen (Brown) Johnston. She was a graduate of Waterbury Catholic High School and Post University, where she earned her degree in Counseling. Carol devoted decades of faithful service as a counselor with the State of Connecticut Department of Correction, where her compassion, insight, and steady presence touched countless lives.
Beyond her professional calling, Carol found joy in life’s many adventures. She was an avid reader who loved to travel, shop, and spend time visiting with her lifelong friends. She was a second mother to her many nieces and nephews, always ready with guidance, wisdom, and heartfelt advice. Carol was especially cherished for her cooking and baking, which she shared generously with family and friends, creating moments of comfort and connection that will long be remembered.
Nothing was more important to Carol than her family. One of eleven children, she was born and raised “under the cross at Holy Land,” an upbringing that shaped her values and deep devotion to those she loved. Her legacy lives on through the stories she told, the lessons she taught, and the love she shared so freely. Her life was a testament to the power of family and friends, the importance of compassion, and the honor of serving one’s community. May she find eternal rest and peace beyond measure, and may her memory never be forgotten.
Left to cherish and honor Carol’s memory are her sisters, Sandra Bartolini and Marian Huckins; her sisters-in-law, Flavia DePolo, Marsha Johnston, and Marie Johnston; and her many beloved nieces and nephews, whom she counted as her own. She was predeceased by her siblings James Johnston, Peggy Brick, Bonnie Lamantini, Robert Johnston, Richard Johnston, Gerald Johnston, Judith Johnston, and Michael Johnston.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff of VITAS Hospice IPU for the exceptional care, compassion, and support shown to Carol and her family during this time.
