Obituary

WATERBURY – With profound sadness but grateful for a life well-lived, the family of Mercedes Redondo, age 96, of Waterbury, shares news of her peaceful passing on December 29, 2025, at River Glen Health Care Center in Southbury after a brief illness.

Mercedes was born in Portugal on August 9, 1929, the daughter of the late Jose and Felismina Pinto and the beloved wife of João Redondo and came to the United States from Brazil in 1971. A devout Catholic she was an active parishioner at of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Waterbury. Mercedes had a wide array of interests, talents and accomplishments but above all, her greatest joy came from being a wife, mother and grandmother. Mercedes loved her family more than anything, expressing that love through warm hugs and delicious homemade food. She took great pride in preparing traditional Portuguese dishes for holidays and life’s milestone moments. Her cooking brought the family together, creating opportunities to share stories, wisdom, and lessons that left an indelible mark on all who knew her. May she now enjoy the eternal rest and peace she so richly deserves.

She leaves behind her son, Valdemar Redondo and his wife Karen of Southbury; her daughter, Judy Alves and her husband Fred of St. Louis, Missouri; her grandchildren Jason (Holly) Alves of Panama City Beach, FL, Cristina (Matt) Maisel of Harrisburg, PA, Jessica Redondo of Waterbury, Kevin (Danielle) Alves of Atlanta, GA, and Sabrina (Zlatko) Tomić of Oakland, CA; and six great-grandchildren. She also leaves her sisters, Alzira Gomes of Middlebury and Delfina Castanheira of Florida. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Joao, and her siblings Diva, Nair, Emilia and Antonio.
