WATERBURY- It is with profound sadness and broken hearts that the family of Mrs. Matilde (Sanabria) Castro, age 60 of Waterbury, shares the news of her peaceful passing on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at the Vitas Inpatient Unit of St. Mary’s Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was beloved wife of Francisco “Frankie” Castro.

Matilde was born on May 30, 1965 in Ponce, Puerto Rico, the beloved daughter of the late Juan Sanabria and Mercedes “Dora” Lopez. She spent her early years in Puerto Rico before moving to New Jersey briefly, finally settling in Waterbury, Connecticut, where she made her home for many years. Matilde was a dedicated bank teller for over 20 years, with her final position at Wells Fargo. She took great pride in her work and loved the independence it afforded her, especially the joy of purchasing her red 1990 Toyota Corolla.

Beyond her professional life, Matilde was a vibrant spirit. She loved visiting the casino, playing bingo, dining out, being with family and shopping. Her passion for family culinary traditions was evident in her famous rice, beans, chicken, and flan, which brought everyone together around the table. Matilde had a flair for fashion, always dressing up, and her creative talents made holidays into celebrations, filled with love and decorations. Family was the cornerstone of her life, she cherished the moments spent with her loved ones, particularly during Sunday breakfasts, and her laughter could always be found conducting karaoke/singing sessions at family gatherings.

Matilde will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, and the love she shared. Her spirit will continue to resonate in the hearts of those she touched. May she rest in peace.

Left to honor and cherish her memory, besides her loving husband of 43 years, are her children: Veronica Castro and Vanessa Lewis, her grandchildren: Jose Garcia Jr., Josiah Garcia, Julian Grass, Jeremiah Lewis and Jayvan Lewis and her siblings: Daniel Sanabria, Carlos Sanabria, Juan “Juanito” Sanabria, Milagros Sanabria and Miguel Sanabria. She also leaves behind niece/“sister” Magdalena and niece/“daughter”Marilyn and many other nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family members and beloved friends. She was predeceased by her grandson: Xavier Castro and her siblings: Angel “Gelo” Sanabria, Pedro “Indio” Sanabria, Teresa Lopez and Zoraida “Zory” Lopez.

A Memorial Gathering for Mrs. Castro will be held on Friday, May 8, 2026, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Casey’s Eastside Memorial Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 1987 East Main Street, Waterbury. Burial will be held on Tuesday, May 12,2026 at 11:00 a.m. at New Pine Grove Cemetery 850 Meriden Rd Waterbury CT 06705.
