Devoted Maternity Nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital for over 30 years
WATERBURY – Ms. Mary M. Unwin of Waterbury passed away on Thursday, April 20, 2023 at the Vitas Innovative Care Unit of St Mary’s Hospital, surrounded by the love and comfort of her family.
Ms. Unwin was born on March 30,1938 in Waterbury, the daughter of the late Thomas and Nora (Fitzgerald) Unwin. A lifelong Waterbury resident she was educated at St. Francis Xavier and Waterbury Catholic High School. Mary went on to become a nurse attending St. Mary’s School of Nursing. She practiced nursing out of state, but returned to Connecticut and was employed at St Mary’s Hospital on the Maternity Unit for over 30 years. Her caring for others was not dedicated to the hospital alone, as she cared for her ailing parents and special needs brother throughout their lives. Mary loved to travel and did so around the world in her earlier years. She enjoyed many times with her good friends Mary Alice and Yvonne and the late Mary O’Connor. As a devoted aunt to her many nieces and nephews, she served a special purpose in all of their lives, never missing a birthday, holiday, or special event. She was a wonderful grand and great grand aunt to many and a devoted godparent. A devout Roman Catholic Mary was a lifelong parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church. Mary was one of a kind. She made the world a better place for all of us, and we are all blessed and thankful to have had her in our lives. The Unwin family thanks you Aunt Mary, for every prayer you uttered for us, for the many sacrifices you made for us, for the thousands of hugs you shared with us, and for the unending love you instilled in all of us.
Left to honor her legacy and cherish her memory are her sister, Ellen Celentano of Schenectady NY as well as her devoted 13 nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers Tom and Richard Unwin and her sister Catherine Marotto, and two nephews Thomas Unwin and Richard Celentano.
Funeral services for Ms. Unwin will be held on Friday, April 28, 2023 at 9;30 am from Casey’s Eastside Memorial Funeral and Cremation Care 1987 East Main St Waterbury 06705 to St. Francis Xavier Church 635 Baldwin St Waterbury to celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Relatives and friends may visit the Unwin family on Friday morning from 9:00 until 9:30 a.m. In leiu of flowers, contributions can be made in her memory to CT Special Olympics.
