WATERBURY- It is with heavy hearts that the family of Mrs. Mary (Boone) Powell, age 91, say farewell for now to our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, who passed away at Waterbury Hospital on September 30, 2026, surrounded by the comfort and love of her family. She was the widow of Lester B. Powell.
Mary was born in Gates County, North Carolina on February 19, 1935, the daughter of the late Wilson W. and Rose A. (Evins) Boone. She grew up in both North Carolina and Virginia, where her deep love for family grew while making Waterbury her final home. Known for her warmth and selflessness, she was always ready to lend a helping hand, especially to the neighborhood children. Cooking was another of her passions, and she delighted in sharing her favorite cooked meals with family and friends. She had a green thumb and found immense joy in gardening. She was an active member of Zion Baptist Church and sung in Senior choir. Family was absolutely everything to her, she cherished time spent with her siblings and her children.
Mary will be deeply missed, but her legacy of love, kindness, and devotion to family and community will live on in our hearts.
Left to cherish and honor her memory are her children: Wilbert L. Powell and Natalie Powell-James and Robert Mann all of Waterbury and her siblings; Pearl Scott and Anna Boone both of Waterbury, Linda Beamon of North Carolina and Luewellen Boone of Waterbury; and daughter in-law Joyce Powell. She also leaves behind her beloved grandson, Zakai James with whom she had a special bond, along with many other grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family members and beloved friends. In addition to her devoted husband Lester B. Powell, she is predeceased by her sons, Leslie Powell who passed in 2025 and James B. Powell, her daughter, Barbara Jean Dickinson, her sisters; Ollie Hargrove and Gloria Edwards and her brothers; Lynwood Boone, Edward Boone, and Warner “Curly” Boone.
