WATERBURY - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Ellen (Giannelli) Eterginio, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, who departed on August 3, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 78 years old.
Born in Waterbury, CT., on February 21, 1947, Mary was the daughter of the late Nicoletta Scopino and Andrew Giannelli. She graduated from Wilby High School. Throughout her life, Mary was dedicated not only to her family but also to her work. Her first job was for Grant’s department store. She was employed for many years at SNET, Bank of Boston in the investment department, and later worked for both the Waterbury Mayor’s Office and the Office of the Army National Guard, where she was known for her strong work ethic. Mary’s greatest pride and joy was her family. She was a truly extraordinary wife, mother, and “Mema.” Mary was the glue that held her family together, made every celebration special, and never forgot an occasion—whether it was wrapping gifts for the holidays with special homemade bows or attending a grandchild’s birthday.
Mary also had a spirited side. She loved the thrill of a good slot machine and was never happier than when she was at the casino with her lifelong friend, Carol and her husband Carmen, or playing poker with her grandkids. She was a dedicated parishioner of St. Leo the Great Church.
Mary leaves behind her devoted husband of 59 years, Carmen of Waterbury; her children, Carla (Ray) Rogozinski of Wolcott and Nikki (Max) Rasmussen of Guilford; and her cherished grandchildren, Lydia Castillo, Jonathan Rogozinski, Max Rasmussen, and Jack Rasmussen. She is also survived by her brothers, Thomas and Andrew. She was predeceased by her sister, Louise Melillo.
Mary will be remembered for her warmth, dark humor, stubborn streak, and strength. She was one of a kind, and she will be missed beyond words.
Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects and visit her family on Tuesday afternoon from 2:00 p.m. until the service commences at 3:30 p.m at Casey’s Eastside Memorial Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 1987 East Main Street, Waterbury, CT 06705. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
