Burial to follow at Old St Josephs Cemetery in Waterbury
MIDDLEBURY- It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Lorraine Joan Brown, age 91, of Middlebury, shares the news of her peaceful passing on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at The Ivy in Watertown. She was the beloved widow of Richard P. Brown Sr.
Lorraine was born on December 27, 1934, in Naugatuck, Connecticut, the beloved daughter of the late Elton and Josephine (Niski) Swanson. She grew up in Naugatuck and was a longtime resident of Middlebury. Lorraine was known for her strong work ethic and generous spirit. For over many years, Lorraine dedicated her life to the care of others, serving as a trusted and comforting presence to patients and families alike as a Registered nurse at St Marys Hospital, private duty and Fairfield Hills. Whether at the bedside in moments of uncertainty or offering reassurance during times of healing, she carried out her calling with quiet strength, kindness, and unwavering professionalism. She also enjoyed reading, going to tag sales on a Saturday and spending time with her grandchildren.
Those closest to Lorraine will remember her for her kind heart, quiet strength, and the steady care she gave to others – both in her work as a nurse and in the way she showed up for her family every day.
Lorraine is survived by her devoted children and their families: Richard Brown Jr., of Middlebury, Christopher Brown and his life partner, Daniel Pennel Jr., of Fort Lauderdale, Fl, Karla Brown of Davie, Florida and Carolyn “Lynn” Downey and her husband Mark of Watertown. She is also survived by her two cherished grandchildren, Elizabeth and Emily Downey and many other extended family members and friends. In addition to her husband, Lorraine was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Kimberly Brown and her sister, Lois Borsos.
Funeral services for Mrs. Brown will be held on Friday, April 17, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. when a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint John of the Cross Church, 1263 West Street, Middlebury, CT.
