Obituary

EAST ORLEANS MA — It is with heavy hearts that the family of Mrs. Lois Muriel (VonTobel) Carrington of East Orleans MA, formerly of Waterbury CT, say farewell for now to our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend following her peaceful passing on Saturday July 11, 2026 after a brief illness in the comfort of her Cape Cod home surrounded by the love of her family. She was the devoted wife of 64 years of the late Lewis D Carrington.

Lois was born June 6, 1934 in Waterbury, a daughter of the late Howard C & Freda (Thorne) VonTobel. She grew up in the Newton Heights (The Hill) section of Waterbury alongside her beloved late siblings, Stephen VonTobel, Patricia Perrin & Doris Wellnitz. She loved telling stories of how they’d all run down the hill together to greet their dad as he walked home from his job at The Pin Shop. While attending Bunker Hill Grammar School, Lois met the love of her life, Lew, & their fate was forever sealed. Legend has it however that their first meeting was in the newborn nursery at St Mary’s Hospital. Shortly after graduating together from Wilby High School in 1952, the childhood sweethearts married & began their cherished family life in Bunker Hill but most of their child raising years occurred in the Overlook neighborhood in Waterbury. Lois was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother. great-great grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt & friend. Nothing meant more to her than her family. She was an incredible “household engineer”, amazing cook known for her delicious meals, known to maintain a spotless home & was the woman behind the man who started The Carrington Company.

Lois was a volunteer at St Mary’s Hospital Gift Shop and often wheeled the “book mobile” around the hospital to patients’ rooms. She had a special place in her heart for the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury where she also volunteered in the gift shop. Once her children were grown, she attended the University of Connecticut to become a Special Education Aide & used that education to volunteer at the old Roosevelt School in Waterbury, assisting special needs students. She was also known to be the BEST babysitter ever & known as “Nana” to all her family. Lew & Lo were always together. They built their second home in their “Paradise” on Cape Cod in 1981 & eventually retired there, welcoming one & all to join them. They opened their warm welcoming home as they did their arms. Inseparable, they also enjoyed extensive travel together through the United States & the world. Lois was a voracious reader & belonged to a book club in her Pochet neighborhood. She was legendary for picking out the absolute best books to read. Her Cape home is filled with beautifully lined bookshelves.

“Nana” attended all her grandchildren’s & great grandchildren’s special events. Recently she especially loved attending all her great-grandchildren’s basketball, baseball & softball games cheering for their teams. She also enjoyed “coaching” the UCONN men’s & women’s basketball teams & the Orleans Firebirds baseball team. Lois was a former member of the Country Club of Waterbury & current member of the Pochet Property Owners Association. Lois was well known by her neighbors both in Overlook & Pochet as she took her long daily walks. She especially enjoyed her walks to the beach on Pochet.

Lois is survived by her cherished children, Beverly & Paul Pashchuk of Pennsylvania, Cheryl & David Jensen of Waterbury, with whom she made her home, Todd & Fran Carrington of Southington & her beloved daughters-in-law Denise Carrington of Wolcott & Michele (John) Griffin of Waterbury. Lois also leaves behind her treasured grandchildren, Jennifer Pashchuk, Kathy & Steve Dodge, Paul Pashchuk Jr, Gretchen Richmond & her fiancé Eddie Mason, Jason & Kelly Richmond, Natasha Pashchuk & her wife Ashley Manion, Alex & Karyn Pashchuk, David C Jensen & his girlfriend Shona Ross, Sarah & Marc Boucher, Emily & Cooper Brown, Samantha & Paul Charette & Brianna Carrington. Lois adored her great-grandchildren, Ashley & Joe, Tristan, Steven, Monica, Paul, Regan, Andrew & Lauren, Noah, Samantha, Maya, Ryan, Connor, Emma, Donny, Anneliese, Oliver, Nikolai, Tyler, Anna, Lorelai, Asa Lew & Camille. Lois also cherished her 2 great- great grandchildren, Anna & Jonah. Lois is also survived by her beloved sisters-in-law, Sue Carrington & Vee Carrington and several cherished nieces, nephews & cousins. Lois’ most treasured times were spent loving her family who loved her so much in return. Lois’ family would like to thank all the physicians, nurses & staff who took such excellent care of her at Cape Cod Hospital & The VNA of Cape Cod Hospice and Palliative Care who helped with her transition to her beautiful home where she was able to pass in the comfort of her family.
