WATERBURY - It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Kevin Patrick O’Leary shares news of his passing on Wednesday April 29,2026 at the Village Green Healthcare Center in Bristol surrounded by his family.
Kevin was born on March 11, 1960, in Waterbury, the fourth child of Neil and Peg (Murphy) O’Leary. Kevin spent the first seven years of his life in the place he loved; Waterbury. He and his five other siblings lived on Ledgeside Avenue in a multi-family home. Kevin’s family of eight lived upstairs and Kevin’s paternal grandmother, uncle, and aunt lived downstairs. Kevin’s family spent their summers on Long Meadow Pond in Bethlehem. Countless wonderful and enduring memories and friendships were made. Kevin’s parents, Neil and Peg, moved their family to Woodbury. The family had a small farm of many animals; cats, dogs, horses, cows, pigs, goats, sheep, and chickens. Kevin always helped out with the many chores, however, let’s just say mucking stalls was not his passion. Kevin graduated from Nonnewaug High School in 1978. He made the courageous decision to serve in the United States Army after high school. Kevin began his military career in Georgia at Fort Stewart. After serving for over a year, Kevin sustained an injury that prevented him from continued active duty. After multiple surgeries and extended hospitalizations, Kevin returned to the place he called home for the remainder of his life, Waterbury.
Here, Kevin began the next phase of his life. He worked for the City of Waterbury in the Parks and Recreation Department. Kevin’s charge at the Department of Parks and Recreation was to close all the parks safely each night. Kevin worked for the city until his retirement age. Because Kevin worked mostly in the evenings, he began a side business of detailing cars. Kevin always had a passion for cars and enjoyed detailing others’ vehicles. His business grew steadily with many repeat customers. Kevin also took on other jobs, such as transporting people to and from the airports and working at Blasius Chevrolet. Kevin loved to be around cars.
As life progressed for Kevin, so did the number of his nieces and nephews. He was an over-the-top proud, uncle. Kevin doted on his eight most favorite people in the world. Unfortunately, Kevin’s health deteriorated over time. Kevin’s injury from when he served began to take a toll on his ability to do what he enjoyed. Kevin entered the Village Green in Bristol in July of 2024.
Kevin will always be remembered fondly by all of his friends and family. Kevin is survived by his siblings: Christine Murphy and her husband, Gary, of Bethlehem, Nancy Bergmiller and her husband, Gregg, of Bethlehem, Neil O’Leary and his wife, Kathy, of Waterbury, Noreen Buckley and her husband, Dennis, of Watertown, and Brian O’Leary of Woodbury. Kevin is also survived by his sister-in-law and friend, Dale O’Leary.
Kevin’s favorite people of all will fondly remember their Uncle Kevin. Patrick O’Leary of North Carolina, Meghan Murphy Fitzpatrick of Massachusetts, Kate Murphy Gould of Connecticut, Sean Buckley of Rhode Island, Jamie Bergmiller Matos of Connecticut, Dennis Buckley of Rhode Island, Claire Buckley of Connecticut, and Maggie O’Leary of Connecticut.
Kevin’s family would like to thank the staff at Village Green, who cared for Kevin with dignity and respect for the last two years of Kevin’s life. A special thank you to Shirley and Emanuel of the Village, who provided so much kindness to Kevin.
Kevin’s family would like to thank all of his friends who meant the world to him and took the time to visit him while he was at the Village Green, especially Scottie Lund, whose weekly visits included his favorite roast beef grinder from Kevin’s local deli; Ann’s.
Funeral services for Mr. O’Leary will be held on Monday, May 4, 2026 at 10:00 am when a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Blessed Sacrament Church 180 Robbins St Waterbury.
