OAKVILLE- It is with profound sadness and broken hearts that the family of Mrs. Jeanne Marie (Hirbour) Thornberg, affectionately known as “Joan” age 92, of Oakville, shares the news of her peaceful passing on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at Cook Willow Health Center surrounded by her loving family. She was the widow of Eugene H. Thornberg.
Joan was born on July 25, 1933, in Waterbury, Connecticut, the beloved daughter of the late Leopold and Lucienne (Trudeau) Hirbour. She is now reunited with her husband, Eugene, who passed away in 2022. She was a loyal mother to her eight children, whom she would do anything for. Joan had a life that was well lived with laughter, love, and countless memories. She looked forward to taking vacations and traveling with her family and friends. She enjoyed life to the fullest and spending time with those she loved. Joan will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. Joan was especially proud of her 15 grandchildren, 8 great- grandchildren and one more beloved great- grandchild on the way.
Her family would like to thank the caring staff of Cook Willow Health and Rehabilitation Center of Plymouth, and Brighton Hospice for the compassionate care shared with Joan and her family during her final days.
Joan leaves behind to cherish her memory are her children, Mark (Julie) Thornberg of Anaheim Hills, CA, her daughter-in-law, Patrice Thornberg of Brewster, MA, Allen (Lorrie) Thornberg of Brewster, MA, Claudette (Lawrence) Adams of Oakville, Diane (David) Pleasant of Thomaston, CT, Maureen Crocker of Framingham, MA, Daren (Frances) Thornberg of Wolcott, and Paul (Lorelei) Thornberg of Thomaston. She also leaves behind two sisters, Marie Parent of Watertown and Claire Meehan of Woodbury and a sister-in- law, Yvette Hirbour of Corona, CA and many other nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family members and beloved friends. Besides her husband, Eugene, of 70 years, Joan was predeceased by her son, Eugene Thornberg and her brothers Louis and Peter.
Funeral services for Mrs. Thornberg will be held on Friday, May 22, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Casey-O’Neill Family Funeral Home, 742 Main St., Oakville, CT. Friends and relatives may pay their respects and visit with the Thornberg family on Friday morning from 9:00 a.m. until the service starts at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
