WATERTOWN- It is with profound sadness and broken hearts that the family of Mrs. Joan R. (Mayor) Cestar, age 81, of Watertown, formerly of Waterbury, shares the news of her peaceful passing on Thursday, June 18, 2026 at Masonicare Health Care in Wallingford. She was the widow of Kenneth A. Cestar.

Joan was born on December 24, 1944, in Waterbury, Connecticut, the beloved daughter of the late Louis and Beatrice (Pasternak) Mayor. A dedicated caregiver, she earned her certificate in nursing from Kaynor Technical School and spent many years as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Waterbury Hospital and Waterbury Extended Care, where her compassion and unwavering dedication made a lasting impact on the lives she touched. Joan was also known for her hardworking spirit, often taking on a second job as a waitress in various restaurants, embodying a selfless nature marked by her commitment to helping others. Her strength and determination were evident in all she did. Joan found joy in simple pleasures, whether it was watching her favorite TV shows, visiting the casino, or sharing moments of excitement through horse racing with her beloved husband, Ken. Above all, her greatest joy came from her family, she especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She will be dearly missed and fondly remembered.

Left to honor and cherish her memory are her children: Beverly Valletta, Steven James and Raechel and Michele James and her grandchildren: Orazio Valletta, Melissa Valletta, Samantha Ricciardi and Gregory James. She also leaves behind her siblings: Sandra Pearl and Sharon Mayor and her longtime partner Jon Stein and many friends. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Kenneth Cestar.

Funeral services will be held privately at the convenience of her family. The Casey-O’Neill Family Funeral Home 742 Main St Oakville CT has been honored to care for Joan and her family during this most difficult time.
