James A. Roberts Sr.

AT THE O'NEILL FUNERAL HOME - James A. Roberts Sr. age 84 of Thompsons Way in Burlington, died Wednesday at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Phyllis (Gillette) Roberts.

James was born December 1, 1924 in Pittsfield Mass., a son of the late Ernest and Katherine (Gavin) Roberts and lived in Pittsfield until 1957 when he and his family moved to Torrington. He was a graduate of Pittsfield High School. Prior to his retirement in 1985, he was employed as a truck driver for O&G Industries. After his retirement, he moved to Brooksville, Fl., where he lived before moving to Burlington four years ago. James was a member of Greenwoods Country Club in Torrington and High Point Country Club in Brooksville. He was a member of the Torrington Elks Lodge #372 and a member of the Knights of Columbus in Torrington. James was a US Navy Veteran having proudly served his country during WWII; he was awarded a unit citation for saving a fellow shipmate of the USS Chevalier by floating in the waters off the Solomon Islands with his shipmate for several hours until they were both brought back on board.

Besides his wife of 65 years of Burlington he leaves a son James A. Roberts Jr. of Brooksville, FL., a daughter Jean Westfall of Harwinton, five grandchildren; Mary, Danielle, Molly, Natalie, and James as well as three great grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sons Timothy and Michael Gene Roberts and two brothers Raymond and Ernest Roberts Jr.

Graveside service with military honors will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Watertown.
