Devoted husband, father and grandfather

WATERBURY – Jaime Gomes, age 101 of Waterbury, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 27th, 2024, at Saint Mary’s Hospital after a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Alzira (Alves) Gomes.

Jaime was born June 16, 1922, in Fall River, MA, the son of the late Jose and Elvira Gomes. In October 1930, Jaime and his parents moved to Portugal, where they were originally from. He spent his early years working on a farm in Portugal, and through his strong work ethic, he got a clerk job in a grocery store. He returned to the United States in 1951, where he settled in Waterbury and made a career as a Service Technician at Uniroyal. He married Alzira (Alves) Gomes in February 1954 in Portugal and had two beautiful sons, Armando and Anthony. Jaime was exceptional in almost every way but he excelled the most at being a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed soccer, gardening, and was a member of the Portuguese Club and as a devout Christian was an active parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Church.

Left to honor his memory and cherish his legacy, besides his wife of 70 years, he leaves his son, Anthony and his wife Elena, his grandchildren; Nicole and her husband Brett, Anthony and his wife Sarah, 2 great-grandchildren, Landon and Gia, He was predeceased by his son, Armando as well as two brothers and 4 sisters.

Funeral services for Mr. Gomes will be held on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. when a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Fatima Church 2071 Baldwin St Waterbury. Burial will follow in All Saints Cemetery, Waterbury. Relatives and friends may visit with Jaime’s family on Wednesday morning from 9:30 a.m. until leaving for Mass at 10:30 a.m at Casey’s Eastside Memorial Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 1987 East Main St., Waterbury.
