WATERBURY- It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Ismael “Maelo” Roman Figueroa, age 82, of Waterbury, shares the news of his unexpected passing on Tuesday, February 10,2026, at Saint Mary’s Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Sonia Rivera, to whom he was married for 24 years.

Maelo was born on December 8, 1943, in Aguada, Puerto Rico, the beloved son of the late Benito Roman and Candida Figueroa. Maelo's life was filled with a love for music; he delighted in singing and strumming his guitar, sharing his passion with family and friends. His warm smile and wonderful sense of humor were infectious; he had a talent for telling jokes that could light up any room. He cherished moments spent playing bingo, creating cherished memories with his loved ones, and truly lived each day with unwavering joy and a sense of gratitude. His happiness and positive energy were constant companions. Maelo was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, and he cherished every moment spent with her. His spirit and dedication as a husband were unparalleled.

Rest in peace, dear Maelo. Your light will forever shine in our hearts.

Left to honor and cherish his memory and legacy, besides his beloved wife, are his sister Nereida Roman, his children: Janette Roman, Daniel Roman, and Evelyn Roman, all of Puerto Rico, Nayda Vilella of Waterbury, and Efrain Vilella of Ansonia. He also leaves behind his cherished grandson as well as many other grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members and friends. Maelo was predeceased by his siblings: Jose Roman, Mario Roman, Carlos Roman, Lucia Roman, and Philomena Roman.

Relatives and friends are invited to pay respects and visit with the Roman Figueroa family on Thursday, February 19, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Casey's Eastside Memorial Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 1987 East Main St, Waterbury, CT 06705.
