Gloria Jean Smudin of Waterbury passed peacefully in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her family on July 17, 2023 following an extended illness. She was pre-deceased by the love of her life, her middle school sweetheart, David J. Smudin Sr., to whom she was married for fifty-six years.
Gloria grew up in Pennsylvania, born February 6, 1941, the youngest of three children to the late John and Ella DeBalko. She set roots in Waterbury in 1974. Here, she devoted her life to raising and nurturing three generations of family and instilled a love of family in each of them. Gloria enjoyed going on her morning walks. She was a passionate gardener who could often be found out in the yard tending her flowers. She was an excellent cook and baker and never hesitated to pass down an old recipe. Gloria was a regular attendee at Saints Peter and Paul Church before her illness.
Nothing was more important to Gloria than family. She created a home that welcomed and accepted all. She cherished weekly family gatherings, holidays and all special family occasions. She will be remembered with a smile on her face, music in her voice, and the great love she had for all of us.
Gloria leaves behind her four children, David J. Smudin, Jr., Kristen Smudin (Jay), Jennifer Snyder (Jonathan), and Melissa Smudin. She has eleven grandchildren: Chris, Stephanie, Amanda, Aimee, Matthew, Nicholas, Ryan, Christopher, Benjamin, Mackenzie, and Lia. She has five great-grandchildren: Carter, Bryson, Gia, Fox, and Ashton. She was pre-deceased by her son-in-law Ryan Kelly.
Gloria will be buried in a private ceremony in Drums, Pennsylvania, where she will rest peacefully with her husband for eternity.
