WINDSOR - It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Mr. Gilbert “Gil” Petteway, age 75, of Windsor, shares the news of his peaceful passing on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at Kimberly Hall South in Windsor.
Gil was born on May 11, 1950, in Waterbury, Connecticut, the son of the late Earl Sr. and Hettie M. (Craig) Petteway. Gil attended Kaynor High School and graduated from Kingsley Hall Prep School in Westbrook, Connecticut. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, serving in Yokota, Japan, during the Vietnam War Era. He worked at Sammons Communications, now Comcast/Xfinity, as a systems technician, as well as the Waterbury Parks/Recreation Department. Gil retired from the City of Waterbury Education Department as a Maintenance Supervisor after 25 years. Gilbert was an avid sportsman ane played semi-pro basketball in Springfield, Massachusetts, semi-pro baseball in Waterbury, and was a certified tennis instructor for the National Tennis Association. Gilbert was also an avid fisherman who loved the peace and solitude of the sport.
Gil loved his family, his sons, and his grandchildren. He was a brave warrior and fought a valiant fight in spite of all the challenges he faced. Each time he fell, he got right back up. His family joked and said that he had 15 lives. He will be greatly missed and his family will cherish his memory and the fine example and legacy he left for them.
Left to honor and cherish his memory are his ex-wife, Hattie (Reed) Petteway, his sons; Gordon Petteway and his wife Connie of Waterbury, Garnett Petteway and his wife Erika of Waterbury, Garrett Petteway and his wife Aisha of Windsor, Gershon Petteway and his wife Quianna of Georgia, and Brian Rush and his wife Wanda of North Carolina. He also leaves his brother, Earl Petteway Jr. of Middletown, his sisters; Donna (Petteway) Whitt of Waterbury, Patricia (Petteway) Ferguson of Waterbury, his uncle, Alexander Carl Petteway of Waterbury, his grandchildren; Gordon Jr, Jordon, Kayla, Javon, Jarrell, Chelsey, and Brooklyn, 15 great-grandchildren, his mother-in-law Hattie Reed, brothers-in-law; David Reed of New London, Sam Reed of Naugatuck, and his sister-in-law Joyce (Hall) Petteway. In addition, Gilbert leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and his dearest best friend, Latiff Joel Christopher Goldson and his wife Arlene of Georgia.
A Memorial Service for Mr. Petteway will be held on Saturday, April 25th, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Casey’s Eastside Memorial Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 1987 East Main Street, Waterbury. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects and visit with his family on Saturday morning from 10:00 a.m. until the service commences at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be held privately at the convenience of his family.
