WOODBURY – Gabriella Egervari Dohanyos, age 83, of Woodbury, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026, surrounded by her family.

Gabriella’s story begins in Budapest, Hungary, where she was born on May 31, 1942, to Judith Bauer Egervari and Charles Egervari Sr. In 1956, when Gabriella was 14 years old, her family fled Budapest in the middle of the night during the Hungarian Revolution, eventually immigrating to the United States and becoming a proud U.S. citizen, although her heart always remained in her beloved homeland.

She settled with her parents and brother in Waterbury, CT, where she graduated from W.F. Kaynor Technical High School in 1960. She went on to earn her hairdressing license, launching a career that lasted over six decades. She was an integral part of many well-known salons in Waterbury, including Barsi’s Beauty Salon, the Wild Strawberry, and her own Gabriella’s Salon of Beauty, which she operated for many years. Many of her customers became dear friends and clients for life, and in their later years she visited them at long-term care facilities to provide continued beauty and dignity.

Gabriella was a true artist. Whether she was painting or cultivating her expansive gardens, there was almost nothing in life she could not make sparkle or shine. She created beauty wherever she went. Her paintings were shared and still adorn the homes of many family members. Gabriella had the blessing of marrying two wonderful men in her life: Richard Gumpert Sr., with whom she raised two sons, and Paul Dohanyos, whom she first met many years before, on her overseas journey to the United States. Within these marriages, family was the most important thing. Her home was often the epicenter for all kinds of holiday gatherings and memorable events. Gabriella was the de facto family historian, and it was at these events that her prolific picture-taking captured generations of laughter, togetherness, and joy.

Gabriella lived a rich and full life, possessed uncommon beauty and charm, and was a teller of fabulous stories. Her infectious laughter brought people closer together and endeared them to her; she made friends everywhere. Her memory will live on in all those she touched throughout the years.

She was predeceased by Richard Gumpert Sr., her husband of 32 years, and Paul Dohanyos, her husband of 23 years. She is survived by her beloved sons; Richard (Theresa) Gumpert Jr. and Jesse (Mariah) Gumpert, her cherished grandchildren; Richard III, Paige, Joy, and Jacqueline, her brother, Charles (Michelle) Egervari Jr., her sister-in-law, Janet (Rick) Ritucci. Gabriella also leaves her nieces and nephews; Danielle (Mark), Chuck, Brandon, and Sean (Margaret), grandniece Giovanna and grandnephew Riley, godson Gergely Molnar, and dear friends Robert Barsi and Ryc Lynch.

Her family is also grateful to Kay and her team, along with Trinity Hospice, for their attentive, compassionate in-home care, and to Civita Care Center at Cheshire.

Funeral services for Gabriella will be held on Monday, March 16, 2026 at 7:00 p.m. at Casey Funeral Home and Cremation Care,1987 East Main Street, Waterbury. Burial will be held privately at the convenience of her family. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects and visit with her family on Monday from 5:00 p.m. until the service commences at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
