Devoted to his family

WOLCOTT - Francis R. "Bud" Whalen, 94, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family on Monday, March 21, 2022. He was the widower of Joan (Hadley) Whalen.

Bud was born April 14, 1927 in Waterbury CT, the son of the late Francis and Margaret (McArdle) Whalen. He attended Wilby High School before proudly serving his country in the U.S. Navy for three years. A standout athlete in high school, after returning home from the Navy, Bud played semiprofessional football in the Waterbury area where he met Joan Hadley, an administrative assistant. They married in June of 1953 and moved to Enfield in 1965. He worked as a machinist at Allen Manufacturing Company in Bloomfield (home of the Allen Wrench) for more than thirty years before retiring in 1989 and moving shortly thereafter to Lake Hitchcock in Wolcott. In addition to spending time with his family, Bud and Joan enjoyed spending the winter months at Georgian Court in Ft. Lauderdale, FL with many of their Connecticut friends.

Left to honor his legacy and cherish his memory are his two children; Ann, and Mike his three grandchildren; Jake, Luke, and MJ, and his brother, Richard of South Windsor. Bud was predeceased by his sister, Veronica and brother, James.

Funeral services for Mr. Whalen will be held Monday, March 28, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Mary Mother of the Church Parish, St. Leo the Great Church 14 Bentwood Dr. Waterbury. Everyone attending is kindly asked to meet directly at the church. Burial with full military honors will follow in Old St. Joseph Cemetery. Relatives and friends may visit with Bud's family on Sunday, March 27, 2022 from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Casey's Eastside Memorial Funeral Home and Cremation Services 1987 East Main St Waterbury, CT 06705.
