SOUTHBURY – Mrs. Bernice (Pinette) Smart, age 98, of Watertown, passed away peacefully on December 8, 2022, at the Lutheran Home of Southbury. She was the loving wife of Alvin Smart for 69 years until his passing in 2019.
Bernice was born on November 10, 1924, to Charles and Victoria (Samtament) Pinette. She attended school on her family farm property outside of Fort Kent, Maine—close to the New Brunswick border. She was one of 14 children and came to Connecticut along with many other French-Speaking Mainers to participate in the Connecticut manufacturing economy. She worked for a variety of local employers over time, including Heminway and Bartlett, Globe Cleaners, and the Taft School. She was a well-known seamstress in the area and operated her own tailoring business for many years. She was a communicant of St. John’s Church. Bernice lived in Watertown for 65 years and was a two-year resident of the Lutheran Home of Southbury at the time of her passing.
Left to cherish her memory and honor her legacy are her beloved sister, Stella (Paul) Garceau, of Watertown, her son, Allen (Jane) Smart, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, her cherished grandson, Trent, a college student at Brown University, and countless nieces, nephews, and cousins in both Connecticut and Maine.
The Smart family would like to thank the staff of the Lutheran Home for their excellent care and recognize the care and support provided by her former neighbors, The Barnick family, and her long-time friend and neighbor, Joan Robinson.
A joint Celebration of Life will be held in the Spring of 2023 to commemorate and honor the lives of Bernice and Alvin.
