NORTH HAVEN- It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Alice B. (Cawett) Berger, age 96, of North Haven, formerly of Oakville, shares the news of her peaceful passing on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, in the comfort of her home surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved widow of Joseph “Joe” Berger.
Alice was born on June 16, 1929, in Waterbury, the daughter of the late John and Alice (Atkocinas) Cawett. She lived a life filled with love and devotion, first as a lifelong resident of Oakville and, in recent years, as a treasured member of the North Haven community residing with her daughter. She was a beloved wife, mother and was a devoted homemaker who poured her heart into caring for her family, always creating a warm and welcoming home. Her nurturing spirit and unwavering support will be dearly missed by all who knew her. A longtime parishioner of Saint Mary Magdalen Church, Alice’s faith was a guiding light in her life, bringing her much comfort and joy.
Alice enjoyed nature, often camping with her husband and family, planting various flowers, and gardening with her grandson, Brian. She enjoyed get togethers for family dinners and finding joy in hiding treats for her great-grandsons, Sal and Joey. Sitting on her porch, surrounded by the gentle sounds of nature and watching the birds at the feeder on her window, brought her true happiness. Alice was also deeply committed to her community. She spent many fulfilling years as a Girl Scout leader and devoted herself to the VFW, contributing to the construction of the Oakville Post with her husband and volunteering in the kitchen for numerous functions over the years, even playing the role of Mrs. Claus for local children’s Christmas parties, sharing joy and laughter with many young hearts.
Left to honor her memory and legacy are her children: Deborah Paturzo and her husband Dominic of North Haven, Karen Ross and her husband Robert of Prospect and James Berger and his wife Deborah of Granby. She also leaves 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren including Brian Paturzo of Woodbury, Chris Paturzo and Christopher (Jenna Mrosek) and Gabriella (Gabriel Braganca) of Prospect and Anthony (Christina Rodriguez) of Waterbury, Gregory (Beth) Paturzo of Northford, Gia (Alex) Cardona and Sal and Joey of West Haven, Anthony (Julie) Ross of Woodbridge, Alison (Patrick) Hale of Alabama, Jason (Sarah) Berger and Jonah of Texas, Michael (Katherine) Berger of Milford, and Carey (Jeffrey) Brunetti and Mackenzie, Evelyn, Callen and Isabelle of Newington. She also leaves behind many other extended family members and friends. She was predeceased by her devoted husband of 54 years, Joe.
Funeral services for Mrs. Berger will be held on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., when a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Disciples Parish, Saint Mary Magdalen Church, 14 Buckingham Street Oakville. Those planning to attend are kindly asked to meet directly at the church. In accordance with Alice’s wishes, she requests that the burial be held privately at the convenience of her family. There are no calling hours. The Casey-O’Neill Family Funeral Home 742 Main St Oakville CT has been honored to care for Alice and her family during this most difficult time. To honor Alice’s memory and in lieu of flowers, donations to VFW Post 7330 85 Davis St Oakville, CT 06779 would be greatly appreciated by the family. In this time of reflection, the family welcomes all who knew and loved Alice to share messages of condolence, comfort, and cherished memories.
