WATERBURY - Theodore August VanDereedt, age 75, passed away on April 3, 2020 at Waterbury Hospital after an extended illness. He was the husband of Mary Ann (DeRienzo) VanDereedt.
Ted was born in Waterbury on August 27, 1944 the son of the late Maurice and Frances (Dubauskas) VanDereedt. He was educated in local schools and worked for many years with Steamfitters Local 777. With great sadness, his family says goodbye to a husband, a father, a grandfather, and a Marine, who served in Vietnam. Family was the single most important thing to Ted. His life revolved around his grandchildren, who brought him true joy. He loved spending a summer vacation at a beach house, watching his granddaughters play sports, or just sitting on the deck in the back yard surrounded by family. Ted was able to visit Italy in recent years, a place he had longed to see throughout his life. Rome, Naples, Sicily, Sorrento, and the Amalfi Coast became the trip and the memories of a lifetime. He spoke of his time there often, with such joy and appreciation. Knowing he was able to fulfill this dream is of great comfort to his family.
Ted could often be heard saying, "A Marine who serves his time in Vietnam goes to Heaven because he served his time in Hell." You could never say he used to be a Marine, he would quickly correct you that he was always a Marine. It gave his family great pride when others would see his Marine Corp hat, stop him, and thank him for his service to our country. He found it difficult to talk about that time in his life, but we could see he took great pride in his sacrifice. His honor as a Marine served his family, as well. Ted's dedication to us all was unquestionable. Any time, day or night, he would be there in a time of need. And the memory of him is here for us now. SEMPER FIDELIS.
Left to honor his memory and cherish his love and legacy besides his wife of 54 years, MaryAnn VanDereedt are his children: his son, Teddy VanDereedt and daughter-in-law Sally, daughter Heather DelPriore, son-in-law Erik. Ted and MaryAnn were blessed with 6 beautiful grandchildren; Cole, Sydney, Juliana, Riley, Nina, and Thea. He is also survived by a brother, Maurice Sanda of Illinois and a sister, Barbara Grenier of Waterbury, and a life-long best friend, Francis Nauiokas.
Due to the current COVID-19 guidelines and associated governmental restrictions regarding the pandemic, all services will be held privately. Once the restrictions are lifted, a community memorial service with full military honors will be announced. He will be at final rest in Mt Olivet Cemetery, Watertown. Casey's Eastside Memorial Funeral Home has been honored to assist the VanDereedt family during this difficult time.
