THE CASEY FAMILY IS HONORED TO BE CARING FOR AND ASSISTING THE FAMILY OF SAMUEL TIRADO
.Recipient of ECSU Presidents Award for Distinguished Service
WATERBURY - Samuel Tirado, Sr. age 91 of Waterbury passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 21, 2018 at the Cheshire House in Waterbury.
Mr. Tirado was born July 1st, 1927 in Guanica, Puerto Rico, the son of the late Antonio Tirado and Inocnecia Padilla Tirado. Sam, who came to Waterbury, CT in 1966 to raise his family, worked at Eastern Connecticut State University as the school's first Coordinator of Community Education Programs and Community Relations Specialist. Sam was a huge advocate for the Spanish speaking population of Connecticut. With the school's support, he was instrumental in starting developmental programs that would educate the Hispanic community. He created programs that would teach the English language, help earn high school diplomas, and enroll in college. Because of his efforts, ECSU President C.R. Webb awarded Sam the "President's Award for Distinguished Service." Sam worked at ECSU for 20 years before retiring to Puerto Rico, where he owned and operated his own home goods store up until just three years ago at the age of 88.
In 1970, Sam was chosen by a representative committee to organize and stage the Annual Puerto Rican Day Parade that was to be held in Connecticut for the first time ever. Later that year he would Grand Marshal the first Puerto Rican Day Parade in Connecticut, through the streets of Waterbury.
Sam is survived by his children; Lourdes Acevedo of Waterbury, Anibal Tirado of New York, Annette Tirado and Noemi Tirado, both of Guanica, PR. his brother, Manual Tirado, and his wife Josephina, of Waterbury. He also leaves behind countless cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as 11 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his devoted wife of 63 years, Julia Tirado. His brother Antonio Tirado, and sister Anna Lopez. His children George Tirado, Sr., Maria "Nelly" Nieves, and Samuel Tirado, Jr, all of Waterbury and his special niece, Wanda Tirado, of Waterbury. The Tirado family would like to thank and acknowledge the staff at the Cheshire House as well as the staff at Season's Hospice for the care and love they shared with Sam and his family throughout his illness
Relatives and friends may visit with Samuel's family on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 from 10:00 till 12:00 pm at Casey's Eastside Memorial Funeral Home, 1987 East Main St @ Southmayd Rd Waterbury CT 06705.
