OAKVILLE - Clinton E Tillotson (Ed) 76, of Oakville, a proud Marine veteran, passed away peacefully after a long illness on Monday, June 20, 2022 at the Vitas unit of ST. Mary's hospital he was the devoted husband of Linda (Hemond) Tillotson with whom they were able to spend 45 wonderful years of marriage.
Clinton was born on June 14th 1946 in Hartford, CT the son of the late Clinton & Marion Tillotson. Clinton proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1963 to 1971 during the Vietnam war. While in service Clinton was honored with the bronze star for hero achievement in aerial fight while serving with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 265. Marine Aircraft Group Thirty-Six, First Marine Aircraft Wing in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On March 1, 1969 Private First Class Tillotson launched as an Aerial Gunner aboard the lead aircraft in a fight of two CH-46 transport helicopters assigned an emergency medical evacuation of a casualty from a friendly unit heavily engaged with a hostile force of Cam Lo in Quang Tri Province. Arriving at the designated area, he skillfully manned his weapon and delivered highly effective fire against the enemy position as his aircraft began its approach to the pick-up site. When his helicopter came under an extremely heavy volume of automatic weapons fire from an undetected hostile force, seriously damaging his CH-46 and wounding both his crew chief and the other aerial gunner. Private First Class Tillotson resolutely delivered suppressive fire with such devastating accuracy that his helicopter was able to maneuver out of the dire hazardous area without sustaining further damage. En route to his base, he assisted the corpsman in administering first aid to his injured comrades. Private First Class Tillotson's courage, superior professionalism and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger inspired all who observed him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. Clinton worked for Acme packaging in New Britain CT until his retirement. Clinton was an active grange member for numerous years in Waterbury & in Naugatuck's Beacon Valley Grange, helping out at any fairs & events & he also helped with the Junior Grange. Clinton also was president of the PFO at Kaynor Tech. Clinton enjoyed helping others as much as possible. Clinton was a Boston Red Sox fan watching all the games & even went to a few he especially enjoyed the teams that beat the New York Yankees. Clinton also was a fan of the Green Bay Packers & the Women’s & Men’s UConn Huskies basketball teams. No buildings are named after him; no monuments erected in his honor. But he DID have the chance to know and love each & every friend as well as all of his family members. How much more blessed can a person be?
In addition to his wife Linda, he is survived by his son's Shaun Tillotson & his lifelong partner Jennifer Applewhite of Waterbury, CT, Christopher Tillotson & his husband Gennaro of New York, 4 grandchildren Tyler Lango, Joseph Tillotson, Angelyna & Sofia with whom he enjoyed & loved spending time with. His brothers Glenn Tillotson of Norfolk, CT, Ray & His wife Theresa Tillotson of Indiana, Many nieces & nephews & all of his friends. Clinton was predeceased by his Sister Deborah Decker & his Cat Princess which he loved very much.
Graveside services with full military honors will be held Thursday, July 7th, 2022 at 11 a.m. at Mt Olivet Cemetery 669 Platt Rd Watertown, CT 06795.
